Active Studios NYC has a connection to The Karate Kid that no other dojo can claim. The films — and the new stage musical — were written by Robert Mark Kamen: Sensei Roy’s brother, and first sensei. They grew up training together, and karate has been their family’s story ever since.
Robert and Sensei Roy both began in Isshin-ryu before finding their lasting home in Goju-ryu — the style Sensei Roy teaches and practices to this day. Goju-ryu was founded by Chojun Miyagi, the Okinawan master whose name inspired the Miyagi of the films. That lineage isn’t a marketing line for us; it’s the tradition we’ve devoted our lives to. Today your child can train in both authentic styles featured in the story, right here on the Upper East Side — and the first class is always free.
At Active Studios NYC, kids don’t just learn how to throw a punch. They learn how to stand still, breathe, listen, and try again. Our Karate Kids Classes are built on the traditional Okinawan roots of the art — the same lineage and philosophy that inspired the Karate Kid films and the upcoming Broadway musical. Two complementary styles under one roof give your child a complete foundation: the inner game and the outer game.
Isshin-ryu is a direct, structured Okinawan style that emphasizes power, precision, and practical self-defense. On screen, this is the energy audiences came to know as “Cobra Kai” — strong, assertive, and combat-ready. As the lead instructor and owner of the dojo, Sensei Bill brings decades of Isshin-ryu experience to students who want a rigorous, disciplined path through the martial arts. It’s also the style that Robert Mark Kamen — the writer of The Karate Kid — first trained in before moving into Goju-ryu, and that early experience helped shape the world he later put on screen.
Most kids start in one style and explore the other as they advance. Together, the two give children a balanced martial education — discipline and confidence, restraint and strength.
And the timing has never been better: as The Karate Kid — The Musical tours the UK in 2026, with West End and Broadway runs to come, a whole new generation is discovering the story. Here in NYC, your child can train in the real Okinawan styles behind it.
As the owner and lead instructor of Active Studios NYC, Bill brings decades of teaching experience and a deep passion for helping students grow. A Karate Black Belt with a Self-Defense Mastery degree and a Master’s in Industrial Design, Bill has taught thousands of students — ages 2 to 99 — how to protect themselves, build confidence, and lead productive, fulfilling lives. A supportive husband and loving father, he brings that same nurturing presence to every class on the Upper East Side, and fosters compassion and high standards in every instructor under his direction at the studio.
Sensei Roy Kamen began training as a child alongside his older brother and first sensei, Robert Mark Kamen — who would go on to write The Karate Kid. The brothers started in Isshin-ryu before making Goju-ryu their lasting home, and it is Goju-ryu that Roy teaches and practices to this day.
Goju-ryu was founded by the Okinawan master Chojun Miyagi — the namesake behind the Miyagi of the films. It is a balanced, “soft-hard” style built on breathing, grounded power, patience, and character. Roy brings that authentic lineage to every kids’ class he leads at Active Studios NYC, building focus, discipline, and confidence in a way that lasts far beyond the dojo.
For our littlest learners, we offer a Karate-themed movement class with their adults, which uses blocks, stances, and basic kicks to open the door to spatial awareness, balance, improved motor skills, and early memorization. In this environment, they will be introduced to the structure and expectations of a martial arts class using age-appropriate methods of play and conversation to reach them where they are as they begin their journey with Karate. Our book, Tiger’s Way Home, will introduce them to their first kata as they act out Tiger’s journey in class and at home.
Students aged 4–7 will learn what it means to practice Karate in a class designed to engage and inspire. Classes are structured with the basics to give them a firm foundation, games which are designed to reinforce the motor skills and spatial awareness necessary for safe and effective Karate, and new movements to practice and grow. They will learn how to meet goals, respect themselves and others, and lead others by having the children lead warm-ups with teacher support.
Paws classes are designed to help our students reach beyond their comfort zone with new skills and a better understanding of themselves. Alongside kata and sparring, they’ll learn important life skills like how to set and meet goals for themselves, to lead others in class through teaching their peers, to resolve conflicts and solve problems, to work as a team, and to extend their spatial awareness to situational awareness for safety both inside and outside the studio.
Parents choose Active Studios NYC because our program is about more than kicks and punches. Children learn how to follow directions, stay focused, work with others, and develop real confidence through steady progress. Each class is taught with care, patience, and high standards so children feel successful as they continue to grow — the way real karate has always been taught.
Your child’s first class is free. Book ahead online or walk in — we’ll get you set up.
